Completion of seafood plant seen in March 2010
CONSTRUCTION of the Seafood Processing Plant in Dagupan will definitely start on July 2 and is targeted for completion within 10 months, according to Dagupan City Agriculturist Emma Molina.
“We are on schedule and we are still confident that all that we agreed upon in the final negotiation last January will be met,” Molina said.
Meanwhile, Molina also clarified that the $2.2 million grant of the Korean government for the construction of the plant will come in the form of equipment, not cash.
While the equipment will come from Korea anda Korean contractor will build the project, a local contractor will be tapped to employ skilled workers from the community where the project is located.
The project is being jointly undertaken by the city government, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Molina also expressed confidence that the area in sitio Russia, Bonuan Binloc where the seafood plant will be built, will be finally cleared of informal settlers “within the week”.
She echoed National Fisheries Research Development Institute Executive Director Dr. Westly Rosario’s statement that the seafood processing plant will fortify Dagupan’s reputation as ‘Bangus Capital of the World’.
Part of the marketing strategy for the seafood processing plant is to identify other opportunities to make the Dagupan globally competitive in exporting bangus, Molina said.
The project will also produce other aqua-marine products raised in Pangasinan, i.e., processed shrimp, semi-processed tilapia, and hito in pellet form, among others.—LM
