Korea-RP University in Pangasinan sought
AFTER securing a $2.2 million grant from the Korean government for the construction of the Dagupan Seafood Processing Plant, 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. is pushing for another milestone project, the establishment of a Korean-Philippine University in Pangasinan.
De Venecia proposed the new venture to the Korean Ambassador to the Philippines, Choi Joong Kyung, who attended the groundbreaking and laying of time capsule for the fish processing plant last Wednesday.
“One of the most important things that Korea can do for Pangasinan and the Philippines is to start working for a Korea-Philippine University here in Pangasinan,” De Venecia said.
The Korea-Philippine University, said De Venecia, will teach Filipino students about Korean work ethics, discipline, the Confucian and overall culture of north-east Asia, and their advancements in science and technology.
De Venecia cited these virtues as important factors in South Korea’s rise from the ruins of war to become one of the 12 industrial powers of the world today.
Choi said he is very supportive of the Korea-Philippine University proposal, citing that blood ties between the Philippines and South Korea was strengthened during the Korean War.
De Venecia made the proposal when Ambassador Choi himself called for larger economic and political partnership between the two countries.
The proposed Korea-Philippine University will also prepare Filipinos for work opportunities in South Korea as well as in Japan and China, De Venecia said.
De Venecia and Choi first discussed the project in a prior meeting held a couple of weeks ago.
De Venecia, former House Speaker, is also proposing a special trade agreement or economic partnership agreement between South Korea and the Philippines and another special trade agreement between Korea and the Association of South East Asian Nations.
There are currently more than 600,000 Korean students and tourists in the Philippines. –LM
