DAGUPAN has created a multi-agency task force to oversee the city’s preparations to counter a possible outbreak of the influenza A-H1N1 virus in the city.

The move was in response to the national government’s call for local government units to initiate precautionary measures against the disease after the Philippines registered its first case of the dreaded A-H1N1 virus.

At the same time, Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., who issued Executive Order No. 14 creating the task force, cautioned the people against panicking, emphasizing that the precautions need to be undertaken particularly now that the country has reported its first case.

“Even without the threat, the general public should stay informed and take daily precautions to stay healthy,” he said.

The mayor explained that the creation of the local body is for the purpose of allocating manpower and resources to enable the city to respond effectively.

“I am optimistic of our country’s readiness to deal with a potential outbreak,” he added

Heading the multi-agency task force is Dr. Leonard Carbonell, city health officer, with key leaders of the health community as members.

The task force will formulate preparedness and response plans and measures, as well as oversee the implementation of the plan.

Region I Medical Center chief Joseph Roland Mejia and Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital director Vivencio Villaflor were named vice-chairmen of the task force.

The members are Councilor Jesus Canto, Liga ng mga Barangay president Lino Fernandez, city veterinarian Dr. Fernando Banchiran, city agriculturist Emma Molina, Pangasinan Medical Society president Dr. Gozar Duque, Department of Health representative Dr. Jose Soriano, public order and safety officer Robert Erfe-Mejia, Dagupan police chief Col. Sonny Versoza, DILG city director Rhoderick Dawis, city information officer Ryan Ravanzo, city schools superintendent Alma Ruby Torio and Malimgas Aliguas Dagupan Vendors Federation president Julie Ann Perez.—LM
