Mangaldan coed named MBK national champion
MANGALDAN—An incoming fourth year high school student of the Mangaldan National High School was adjudged the Munting Bayani ng Kalikasan national champion.
Sushen Jimbel Mariz M. Sison, 14, daughter of Jail Sr. Insp. Roque Constantino Sison III and the former Dr. Jay Mayurgas, topped the national competition held last week at Teachers Camp in Baguio City.
Sison, who won the title Ms. Environment 2008 in the Girls Scout of the Philippines Environmental Peace Rally held at the San Fabian Sports Complex in October 2008, was awarded the championship trophy and cash prize.
Sison bested contestants from other provinces for the national award when her projects in support of the environment were chosen as the best project on environmental protection.
The competition dealt on measures to cushion the impact of climate change.
Her projects included the planting of trees along the Angalacan River in Mangaldan that seeks to prevent soil erosion and provide balance to the environment.
Meanwhile, Mangaldan won the Pakar Award this year as the province’s “Cleanest Municipality with the Cleanest River”.
In her essay, Sison wrote in part: “In our little ways, we can avert global warming. We don’t need to die to be a hero. We have tons of ways of heroic action to save our environment for a safer place to live in.”
The annual search for Munting Bayani ng Kalikasan is sponsored by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
OTOS SCHOLAR
Meanwhile, 15-year Christine Prestoza was chosen One Town, One Scholar (OTOS) of Mangaldan from among the town’s honor graduates.
Prestoza and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Conrado Prestoza of Barangay Buenlag, and Mayor Herminio Romero, were honored in Malacañang on Wednesday together with the other OTOS scholars all over the country.
Graduating as third honorable mention from the Mangaldan National High School, Prestoza will study for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications at the University of the Philippines in Baguio City.—LM
