One more congressional district for Pangasinan
JDV SAYS
PANGASINAN will have one additional legislative district once a special legislation is approved in the House of Representatives providing for the creation of new districts in the Philippines.
Fourth District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. said under the proposed law, the first, second, and third districts of the six existing districts will be re-configured to form a seventh district.
A bill seeking the creation of a seventh district in the province was jointly filed by Reps. Victor Agbayani of the 2nd district and Rachel Arenas of the 3rd district with the support of á Rep. Arthur Celeste of the 5th district
“But unless a special legislation is approved, this additional congressional district for Pangasinan cannot be approved,” De Venecia explained.
Under the Agbayani bill, the proposed seventh district will be carved out from the first, second and third districts of Pangasinan.
De Venecia said he did not allow any town and city in the fourth district to be included in the proposed 7th district.
Fifth and 6th district Reps. Mark Cojuangco and Conrado Estrella III also did not allow their respective districts to be affected.
Some sectors support the creation of a total of 10 districts for Pangasinan considering its population that now stands at 2.2 million.
There is a constitutional provision which states that a congressional district must have a population of at least 250,000.—LM
