STO. TOMAS– This town’s municipal employees have kissed their mobile cellular phones goodbye during office hours.

On orders of Mayor Viven Villar, cellphones are now banned for use among the local government employees while they are on duty.

The new policy was issued aimed at improving delivering public service.

“We in government service are mandated to serve the people well and promptly,” said Villar, who was prompted to impose the ban as she noted the distraction caused by cellphones among employees and elected municipal councilors during meetings.

“It becomes irritating whenever I see them devoting their time texting instead of working,” she said.

Employees have been advised to check their messages or missed calls during the 15-minute coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon as well as during their lunch break.

Villar said she will not hesitate to punish violators by suspending them if they violate this policy.

So far, the mayor said no one has questioned her order as she knows that employees understand the objective behind it.

The residents hailed the policy noting the improvement in the services at the town hall.

“Also, in this economic hardship, we must all save,’ she added.

For emergency cases, messages could be communicated through the mayor’s landline, which will then be delivered to the employee concerned.#
