DESPITE a limited agricultural area, Dagupan can has a high production of rice and corn, according to City Agriculturalist Emma Molina.

Molina said at least 16 hectares of land in Barangay Mangin alone has now been planted to inbred and hybrid rice.

Technologists from the regional office of the Department of Agriculture (DA) were in Dagupan last Tuesday to teach farmers how to increase their rice yields.

The farmers, who come from the city’s different barangays, were taught techniques on proper planting by rows, improved land preparation, and fertilizer management.

Meanwhile, Molina said the DA regional office and members of the partylist Abono will be in Dagupan on February 3 to formally launch the “Maisan sa Barangay” project, in coordination with the city government.

Councilor Librada Reyna said there are too many idle lands in the city that can be planted to corn in support of the “Maisan sa Barangay”, a province-wide project aimed at increasing Pangasinan’s corn output.

Molina identified 11 barangays with a high potential for growing corn, including Lucao, Malued, Manguin, Salisay, Tebeng, Tambac, Pogo Grande, Lasip Grande, Pantal, Bacayao Norte and Bonuan Gueset.

Mayor Alipio Fernandez, in his State of the City Address last January 26, said his administration is also pushing for renewed planting of food crops in backyards as well as idle lands to help the people become more self-sufficient in their food requirements.—LM
