Protest mars math tilt

PROTEST marred an elimination round for the elementary level of the MetroBank-MTAP-DepEd Match Challenge held at the Division Training Center in Dagupan on January 9.

The complaint was lodged by Mr. and Mrs. Bernabe Dy Jr. in behalf of their son Mark John, a grade VI pupil of Mother Goose School, one of the competitors in the eliminations.

Lawyer Jose Netu Tamayo, representing the Dys, formalized the complaint through a letter dated January 13, 2009 addressed to City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo.

The Dys complained after Mark John was dropped from a supposed tie with another pupil for the top spot, to a tie for the second place.

The announcement during the competition was supposed to be final and a tie-breaker was to be scheduled for the two top winners.

After four days, however, the Dys were shocked to learn from DepEd officials that there was an error in the checking of one of Mark John’s answer, which reduced his score.

The Dys said the change in decision was made “without showing any basis for said error including the scratch papers used by the children from which their answers can be verified”.

Dy said his son has lost faith in the system and the credibility of the panel of judges because of what happened.

The contest was also participated in by pupils from St. John, Divine Word Academy of Dagupan, Pangasinan Universal Institute, Dominican School, Creative Montessori, La Marea, Harvent School and St. Albert.— LM
