Acting Mayor Belen Fernandez boosts scouting in Dagupan

ACTING Mayor Belen Fernandez hailed the country’s boy scout movement as one of the best leadership training ground for young men, focusing on virtues of discipline and love of country at the three-day Boys Scouts of the Philippines Council Jamborette 2008 held at the Ramos Farm in Bonuan Binloc on Thursday.

The jamborette, with the theme “Scout Creating a Better World”, was attended by boy scouts from five school districts and private schools.

The scouts pitched tents in the farm owned by businessman Rudy Ramos located in front of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center in Bonuan Binloc.

The participating scouts had fun as they competed in physical fitness challenges, hiking/trail signs and the Mayor Al Fernandez Challenge.

The participating boy scouts were made to demonstrate their skills in survival cooking, physical fitness, hiking /trail signs, compass reading, first aid and emergency preparedness, rope work and pioneering and building stick.

Fernandez stressed the importance of scouting in developing good moral character and imbibing young boys with the virtues of self-help, self reliance and love of work and people.

The camp was named Camp Belen T. Fernandez in honor of the acting mayor of Dagupan who has been a regular supporter of the scouting movement in the city.

Fernandez, the jamborettes’ special guest, challenged the young scouts to help build a strong, vibrant and peaceful city through community activities.

Dean Hermogenes Decano, the BSP Council chairman, stood as honorary camp chief with City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo as Camp Chief, Edilberto Abalos as deputy camp chief with Dr. Danilo Sison, Victor Patawaran and Dr. William Macob as assistant deputy camp chiefs for activities, administration and finance, respectively.

The camp directors were Dr. Melita Gatchalian and Dr. Reynaldo Barrozo while Fred Balmores was deputy camp director.

The scout executive was retired City Schools Superintendent Leon Palaganas Jr. He is also the council vice chairman. Other scout officials were Rafael de Peralta, treasurer; Dr. William Macobs, Assistant City Treasurer; Jaime Nabua, auditor; and Domingo as council scout commissioner.

The members of district committees were Engr. Rodolfo de la Cruz, District I; Rolando Coson, District II; Carino Aquino, District III; Barangay Captain Perfecto Velasquez, District IV; Atty. Albino Gonzales, District V; and Benigno Chico Jr, District VI.

After formally opening the camp, Acting Mayor Fernandez attended the BSP Court of Honor, where she was also invited as guest speaker, held at the Federico Ceralde Elementary School in Bonuan Binloc. She presented merit medals to outstanding schools in the city that contributed immensely to the success of the scouting movement in the city.

Dean Decano opened the Court of Honor while the awards program was presided over by Palaganas and Education Supervisor Edilberto Abalos.

Special plaques of merits were conferred by the BSP to Living Lights Academy Foundation, Wonderland School, and Juan L. Siapno Elementary School for leading in scout membership drive.

The gold medals of merit were conferred on Stella Bugayong, Felicidad Alagojoyo, Aurora Domingo Romulo Musni, Condrado Rosario, Lina Sarmiento, Ernesto Suarez and Rosita Carvajal.

Thirteen scout leaders, namely Olivia Agas. Felicidad Alagojoyo, Minda Arzadon, Rafael de Peralta, Violeta de la Cruz, Geraldine Ferreria, Juanito Magsano, Leonardo Manansala, Alicia Quimboy, Alfredo Quinto, Liberty Roxas and Edna Soriano were awarded silver medal of merit.

The bronze medal of merit were presented to Melam Alcantara, Liduvina Antonio, Carino Aquino, Divina Baltazar, Felciano Bautista, Rogelio Bautista, Silverio Callejo, Patgricia Quino, Erly Datario, Manuel Ferrer, Eleanor Lopez, George Mejia, Wilma Hilaria Moreno, Louella Quitoriano, Ronnel Salazar, Edison Soriano, Elsa Taropn, Ophelia Vergonia and Teddy Villamil Jr.

Twenty others were presented the gold service award, 15 with silver service award and 49 with bronze service award. —LM
