82 centenarians receive P100,000 cash incentive

EIGHTY-two centenarians in Region 1 have so far received their P100,000 cash incentives from the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development since January this year.

Iryn Cubangbang, DSWD regional information officer, said it will seek to present awards to 167 centenarians this year.

There are 15 centenarians in Ilocos Norte who have received this year their incentive, while 29 others are from Ilocos Sur, 17 in La Union and 21 in Pangasinan.

The oldest living centenarian who received the incentive is 108-year old Adelina Balan from Infanta, Pangasinan.

Under R. A. 10868, “An Act honoring and granting additional benefits and privileges to Filipino centenarians”, all Filipinos who reach the age of 100 years old, whether residing in the Philippines or abroad, shall be honored with a Letter of Felicitation from the President of the Philippines congratulating the celebrant for his or her longevity and all Filipinos who live to 100 years, otherwise known as a centenarian, will receive P100,000 centenarian gift.

Cubangbang said based on their interviews with the centenarians and their children, the secret to their longevity is eating the right foods, mostly vegetables and having happy thoughts.

Last week, two centenarians from Dagupan City, Eugenia Escosio and Epifania Mariñas, both aged 101, received their incentives from the DSWD. (PhilStar Wire Service)
