Fishing gears for 359 fisherfolk ready in December
SOME 359 marginalized fisherfolk in all the coastal barangays of Dagupan will benefit from the P2.1 million fund allocated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 under the Bottom Up Budgeting (BUB) program.
The amount was received by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, accompanied by City Treasurer Romelita F. Alcantara and City Agriculture Officer Emma J. Molina, during the culmination program of the 53rd Fish Conservation Week Celebration at Oasis Country Resort in San Fernando City, La Union.
Molina disclosed that the P2.1 million is intended for the purchase of 250 units of fishing gears or gillnets (tabal), 84 boats (baloto) and five motorboats with 16 horsepower Briggs and Straton motor and a fish finder.
Beneficiaries will come from Barangays Pugaro, Salapingao, Carael, Calmay, Lucao, Bonuan Gueset and Bonuan Binloc.
The program forms part of the 2016 BUB submitted to BFAR as a result of a series of barangay consultations by the mayor where marginalized fishermen requested that they be provided with fishing gears of their own.
As its equity, the city of Dagupan allocated P1.4 million in its 2016 Annual Investment Plan.
The mayor hopes to distribute the equipment on December 27, in time for the feast of Saint John the Evangelist, a fisherman himself, and is the patron saint of Dagupan.
So far, the Fernandez administration already provided 224 boats, 24 motorboats and 269 gillnets to marginalized fisher folks. (CIO)
