Students form ‘Lente’ in Dagupan

FOR CREDIBLE ELECTIONS

LENTE1 LENTE2

A GROUP of law students in Dagupan City has organized themselves as the local chapter of Legal Network for Truthful Elections (LENTE) to make a difference and help make the 2016 local elections credible.

The city chapter began making its presence felt by conducting voters’ education in the province’s district jails and in campuses and supporting local Comelec’s Operation Baklas, removing illegal sized campaign materials and others posted outside of the designated common poster areas in the city.

Lente is the first and only non-partisan, nationwide network of lawyers, law students, paralegals and other trained volunteers engaged to do election work was established in 2007 in response to widescale and systematic fraud during the past election.

The local chapter will monitor the canvassing of tallied votes in cities, municipalities, and provinces around the country in addition to conducting information on election laws and punishable offenses, and voters’ rights.

It will also pursue criminal and administrative cases against violators of election laws.

The Dagupan chapter was formed on March 13 after the colleges of law in University of Pangasinan and Lyceum Northwestern University organized their respective chapters and has since been involved in voters’ education, information dissemination, human rights monitoring and assisting Comelec Offices.

It has conducted voters’s education in Area 1 Vocational Rehabilitation Center, a training facility for Persons with Disabilities, PSU campus in Lingayen, the district jails in Dagupan City, Balungao, Burgos, San CarlosCity and the Lingayen Provincial Jail.

The chapter is preparing TEPET ed Councilor, a graphic fact sheet on the stands and platforms of the candidates for councilor in the city to educate the voting public on the priority projects of our candidates.

It also plans to hold a Councilor Candidates Forum on May 5 which will be covered by different media outlets.

Meanwhile, LENTE Dagupan Chapter continues to recruit ‘Hero Volunteers’. (Volunteers can message the chapter at FB Page at fb.me/msg/lentedagupanchapter or at lentedagupanchapter@gmail.com).
