Still no classroom for 26 school children in Sison

NO HELP FROM DEPED

SISON—After the Department of Education has assured the country that enough classrooms have been constructed to accommodate enrollees particularly in Region 1, twenty-eight Grade six students of the Pindangan Elementary School here continue to wonder whether the Aquino administration even knows their school exists.

Reason? The Department of Education has not acted on the school’s request for the construction of additional classroom for them.

They continue to suffer the sweltering heat during the dry season and cold during the rainy season while grappling with their studies because their makeshift classroom in the school compound is merely covered by a canvas.

The makeshift classroom used to be the school’s nursery for culturing mushrooms.

The schoolchildren, mostly from poor families in Sison, have no choice but to bear the inconvenience and health risks because Sison’s local government reportedly has no budget for it as well.

The request for a new schoolroom was reportedly made last year but the release of a budget for the construction of the same appears to have been diverted.

The pupils have been holding classes under the tent since June last year.

A school official, who requested anonymity, expressed fear that the heat under the tent classroom may worsen further and lead to health problems among the students.

The school official continues to appeal to the business sector and affluent families of Sison now residing overseas to help raise funds for the construction of additional classrooms.

Sison Mayor Mina Pangasinan could not be reached at prestime for some background on the school’s problem. (Leonardo Micua)
