LINGAYEN – Two prodigies of chess clinics and tournaments sponsored by the provincial government topped the recently-concluded 5th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championships (PAGCC) held on October 10-11 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PDTC), here.

Maycydel Fajardo of San Fabian, a national finalist for Batang Pinoy 2015, secured the top plum in 14 and under category, besting Jan Darryl Bautista of Baguio City (2nd place) while John Ruiz Bravo from Lingayen, a two-time Palarong Pambansa contender, outsmarted Jerome Angelo Aragones of Cavite (2nd place) in the 12 and under category.

Top winners in other age group categories are: Karlycris Clarito, Jr. of Pasig City (8 and under); Janclifford Labog of Nueva Vizcaya (10 and under); Dale Bernardo of Pampanga (16 and under); Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao (18 and under) and Mcdominique Lagula of San Beda College (20 and under).

A total of 29 local chess talents from Pangasinan placed in the top 10 in each category, which include: Archeon Mer Bautista of Lingayen (3rd place in 8 and under), Beaver Gwayne Vinluan of San Fabian (3rd place in 10 and under) and Janeya Carbonell of Bolinao (3rd place in 12 and under).

Brylle Gever Vinluan of San Fabian and Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas, who are now varsity players in private schools in Manila placed 3rd in 18 and under and 20 and under categories, respectively.

At the opening ceremonies of the 5th PAGCC, Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. expressed gratitude to parents and chaperons of the participating chess players for their unwavering support to their children in playing chess.

On behalf of Governor Espino, Provincial Sports Director Modesto Operania along with Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) President Juan Vicente Sison and Provincial Information Officer Orpheus Velasco awarded the cash prizes to the winners during the closing program held on October 11 at the PDTC.

Pascua completed the third and last GM norm last August in Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, but still needs to earn 48 more points to upgrade his existing Elo chess rating from 2452 to 2500 to be formally declared as the 16th GM of the Philippines and the first Pangasinense to attain said feat. At 21, he was feted as the second Pangasinense International Master (IM) — 57 years after when the late Rodolfo Tan Cardoso of Alaminos City, the first chess IM in Asia, got the title. /MGOblanca
