Former Mayor De Vera at the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound, is visited by Mayor Ricardo Camacho.

BAYAMBANG—A former mayor here survived an attempt on his life when an unidentified gunman shot and wounded him around early morning last Thursday in Barangay Poblacion Sur this town.

P/Senior Superintendent Rolie Saltat, OIC-police director, told The PUNCH that he and ex-mayor Leocadio de Vera Jr, 62, talked at the hospital and the latter recounted what happened.

According to De Vera, who was shot by an unknown suspect and hit on his left shoulder, he walked to the bank across his residence where he talked to a former school principal, when a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt standing behind a parked car on the other side of the road approached and shot him.

De Vera managed to fire back but was not sure if he hit the suspect who immediately ran away after being shot at.

Based on empty shells recovered at the crime scene, the suspect used .45 caliber hand gun.

De Vera was initially rushed to the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City and later transferred to Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital.

Saltat said De Vera is already in stable condition.

The motive for the shooting is still undetermined, Saltat said, and all possible angles are being looked into.

De Vera, a three-term mayor, is reportedly eyeing a comeback for the mayoralty post in next year’s elections.

Sometime in 2010, De Vera’s house was fired upon by unknown suspects but no one was hurt. (Tita Roces)
