MBTF: No barefoot street-dancing, please

THE countdown to the series of activities that promises to make this year’s Bangus Festival the happiest and biggest yet, begins this week.

This year’s edition of the Bangus Festival is set to open in the afternoon of April 17  with the “Gilon-Gilon ed Baley” but with one notable change for health reasons: in view of the hot summer that has the streets searing hot, no street-dancer will be allowed to perform barefooted!

This was stressed by Mayor Belen Fernandez when she advised the organizers of street-dancing in the 31 barangays to be mindful of the health of the dancers.

The executive committee of the Bangus Festival has since directed that all dancers must at least wear slippers.

“We took note of the hot weather, so instead of having the “Gilon Gilon Ed Baley” in the morning like before, we will assemble all the dancers at 1:00 p.m. so that they will be on their way by 2:00 p.m.,” the mayor said.

The street-dance parade around the downtown loop and end at the city plaza featuring 19 contingents in the city, will commence at 2 p.m.

A silent drill of cadets of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy from San Narciso, Zambales at the city plaza, will precede the presentation of street dancers.

Defending champion in the ‘Gilon Gilon Ed Baley” is Barangay Pantal. It dethroned five-time champion Lucao last year.

“Gilon-Gilon” is a street dance that depicts the harvesting of milkfish from the fishponds in the city.

The champion “Gilon-Gilon” dancers will represent the city in the “Festivals of the North” on April 27. Expected to compete are 13 other festival street dancing champions from other provinces and cities north of Manila, Ms. Fernandez said.

The “Festivals of the North” will start at 7:00 a.m.

At the same time, the Bangusan Street Party along the Jose R. De Venecia Expressway will be opened to the public by 4:00 p.m. on April  30 with seven to eight famous rock bands from Manila invited to perform. (Leonardo Micua)
