Five kids drown in watershed

BUGALLON–Three siblings, one of whom had wanted to become a teacher, another a soldier and the last a baker, did not live long enough to make their parents proud. They, together with two other relatives, drowned in a watershed in the town’s Barangay Hacienda last Tuesday.

The casualties were siblings Rose Ann, 14, Nelson Jr, 12, Carlo Marco, 11, all surnamed Ambos and their relatives Christian Lee Salazar, 10 and Manuel Bugayong, 11, all residents of Navato St., Barangay Poblacion this town.

3- KIDS DROWN

Relatives and friends view the remains of siblings Nelson Jr.,12;  Rose Ann,14; and Carlo Ambos,11, that  lie in state at the house of a relative in Poblacion, Bugallon.

Mylene Ambos, 37, mother of the three siblings, and her husband, Nestor, who accompanied the children, were not aware that the kids who jumped into the 14 feet deep water to wade had already disappeared as they arranged their picnic food in one corner.

By the time the accompanying parents realized the children were missing, they had already been washed away by a current and drowned.

Despite the tragedy in their family, Mylene and Nelson Sr. said they have not lost their faith in God and are thankful they have two other daughters, aged 9 and 7, with them.

Meanwhile, Marites, 45, mother of Manuel (one of 10 children), said she was not aware that her son joined the Ambos’ family picnic. She only learned of her son’s death when one of the rescuers told her about the drowning incident.

The body of Salazar was brought to the family’s home in another barangay.

Since the incident, the town deployed its Water Search and Rescue team in the area to prevent other children from swimming. (Tita Roces)
