IT’S “open for business” again for all shellfish farmers in western Pangasinan.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) finally lifted the shellfish ban in Bolinao and Anda where red tide lingered for over four months.

Dr. Westly Rosario of BFAR’s National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC), said the latest lifting came a week after the shellfish ban in Alaminos City and Barangay Wawa, Ban, was also lifted.

The lifting of the shellfish ban means the fish farmers in Pangasinan can now collect or gather their shellfishes, such as oysters and mussels and alamang.

The silver lining in the four-month lull in harvest is bigger, fatter and tastier shelffishes.

The red tide episode first broke out in Alaminos City on September 24 last year and eventually spread to Wawa, Bani and then to Anda and Bolinao or a period of  four months, said Rosario. This was the longest red tide episode ever experienced in these areas since 2001.

Dagupan, another major producer of oyster was spared from the red tide.

The latest shellfish bulletin signed by BFAR National Director Asis Perez listed coastal waters in the provinces that are still positive of red tide, namely, Milagros, Masbate; and in Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal in Bataan. (Leonardo Micua)
