Dagupan Chinese Festival set February 7 to March 5

ANOTHER first will be introduced this year in Dagupan Cty.

A month long celebration of the Chinese Festival will be staged in Dagupan City from Feb. 7 to March 5, and if the activities and the public clamor demand it, Mayor Belen Fernandez has been given the authority by the Sangguniang Panlungsod to extend it up to March 31.

This was contained in the ordinance passed by the SP in its last session effectively closing the Zamora Street to traffic for the duration of the festival to give way to the holding of a cultural and trade fair, the main highlight of the celebration of the Chinese Festival in conjunction with the observance of the Chinese New Year on Feb. 19.

Councilor Marvin Fabia moved for the passage of the ordinance after City Administrator Farah Decano told the city council the festival is being proposed, and will be organized by the Chinese–Filipino community in the city in consultation with the mayor.

Decano said the Festival will showcase Chinese products, food and culture and will help boost the city’s tourism industry.

“It’s up to the mayor if she will extend the Chinese Festival which I personally support,” said Erfe-Mejia, a member of the minority in the city council who introduced the amendment to Fabia’s measure.

The Chinese Festival will in effect dovetail the Bangus Festival, another month long celebration!

Mayor Fernandez said the residents and tourists will be regaled with a series of display of colorful fireworks, an array of Chinese arts, culture (including dragon dances) and more exotic Chinese food. (Leonardo Micua)
