BINMALEY—This fishing town reasserted its claim to its title as the Aquaculture Center of the North for producing the biggest volume of fish from its fishponds when the townsfolk celebrated their bountiful harvests during Sunday’s Sigay Festival.

Mayor Simplicio Rosario expressed elation over the renewed enthusiasm of residents and fish farmers who trooped to the Poblacion to celebrate the Sigay Festival.

The revelers simultaneously grilled fishes, i.e., prawns, Malaga, bangus and tilapia, cultured in vast fishponds here as live bands entertained them capped by a 13-minute fireworks display during the street party.

“Our people are one in asserting that indeed Binmaley remains the Aquacenter of the North, where about 60 to 70 percent of our livelihood comes from fishing,” the mayor said.

Rosario, brainchild of the Sigay Festival which he started in 2010, said the annual event is a big boost to the town’s aquaculture industry and provides the opportunity for the people to showcase their unity as a community.

Sigay is a Pangasinan word that connotes fishing.

Records of the Municipal Agriculture Office show that 22 out of the 23 barangays here have inland fishponds and there are 2,752 hectares devoted to bangus production here farmed by 2,222 fishpond operators and owners.

The avearge production per hectare is 2.5 to 2.7 tons per hectare.

Fish produce here are mostly brought to the Malimgas Market in nearby Dagupan City where these in turn are bought by traders that sell these to other Pangasinan towns and municipalities and other provinces. (Tita Roces)
