NO SUSPENSION IN SIGHT

WHILE Congress debates whether to suspend anew the elections of Sanggnuniang Kabataan (SK) chapters in the country, 129, 772 youths, ages 15 to 17, already registered for the elections on February 21.

Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor of the Commission on Election (Comelec) in Pangasinan, said San Carlos City registered the most number of SK voters with 7, 474, followed by Malasiqui with 5, 872 registrants, Bayambang with 5, 062, Dagupan City with 4, 948 and Lingayen with 4, 132 registrants.

A low turnout has been noted in Dagupan.

Salas confirmed that the elections will be done through manual voting.

He said the polls will likely push through unless Congress fast-tracks its passage.

Comelec Res. No. 9905 provides that election period starts on January 22 and will end on March 2. The election gun ban will start on January 22.

Filing of certificates of candidacy will be on February, 7, 9 and 10 while the campaign period will be from February 11 to 19.

Meanwhile, Comelec offices will continue to accept registrations, validations, transfer and correcting of entries.

The various offices will focus on campaigning for the completion of biometric data of voters to validate their registration and be able to vote in 2016 elections.

As of December 20 last year, 179, 000 out of 320, 000 voters have validated their registration.

“We are targeting at least 90 to 95% of voters with incomplete biometric data to be validated before the deadline on October 31”, said Salas. (Hilda Martin Austria/PNA)
