MAYOR Belen T. Fernandez has started introducing organic farming among farmers in the city on January 15 beginning in Barangay Salisay where she turned over a vermi-composting equipment and a solid waste shredder.

“This is a cluster project for barangays Tebeng, Bolosan and Salisay. We are going to provide vermi-composting facility composed of a shredder, vermi-shed and vermi-worms so that farmers can start their community gardening. We are doing this because we would like to go back to the basics of farming which is good for everybody’s health,” Fernandez said.

City Agriculture Officer Emma J. Molina said that while the city conducted a series of farmer classes on how to set up and operate a vermi-composting facility, “we will still identify 20 pilot households  in each participating barangay in the cluster to serve as our model for organic farming”.

“Ito yung kanilang backyard level of producing compost or they can opt to have one barangay cluster and put therein their biodegradable waste after having it shredded. So, there will be one shredder that will be shared by three barangays, the farmers in particular,” Molina said.

Molina disclosed that the program will bring to reality the vision of Mayor Fernandez for a healthy Dagupan and this will serve as an umbrella project of the city for the rural based farmer’s organization.

She added that in the long run, each household will be encouraged to practice containerized gardening in their backyard to provide them food without buying this anymore from the market.

In addition, the city also provided the farmers shallow tube wells with a 5 HP water pump to assure irrigation water to their lands. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
