THE tall, thin and wiry former national rider Reynaldo Navarro has the perfect built for sprinting, and he proved that true by out-pedaling his eight breakaway partners in the last 250 meters in a mad scramble finish during the 2nd RD Gen. Bataoil Cycling Challenge held last Sunday.

The nine-man lead pack that successfully broke away from the main bunch after 45 kilometers of pedal-pushing, spearheaded by Navarro, registered an identical time of three hours, 32 minutes and 20 seconds for the 142 kilometers trek that traversed the central and some western municipalities of Pangasinan.

The 32-year old Navarro, a 2005 SEA Games veteran from San Jacinto, bagged the P8,000 top prize.

Mangaldan amateur rider Ariel Flores and Navarro’s town mate, PepitoCalosa, came in second and third to pocket P6,000 and P4,000, respectively.

Binalonanian Elmo Ramos, Jr. landed fourth for a prize of P2,000. San Fabian’s lanky cyclist Sherwin Carrera checked in fifth and received P1,000.

Rounding up the top 10 who received P500 each were 2006 Padyak Pinoy champion Santy Barnachea of Umingan, 6th; Mangaldan son Renato Sembrano, 7th; San Jacinto promising athlete Reynaldo Calosa, 8th; San Jacinto aging road player Wilfredo Calosa, 9th; and San Fabian-born Rene Esteban.

The two summit sprint prizes worth P3,000 donated by Public Works and Highways 2nd Engineering District Director Rodolfo Dion, Blandino Caguioa, Chief Inspector Ferdinand de Asis and Zebedee Pharmacy, held in Mangatarem and Sual were dominated by Ramos, Carrera and Barnachea.

All finishers receivedan incentive prize of P200 apiece.

The road battle “Siklista Kontra Sa Droga” was participated in by 56 professional and amateur riders. It was held in conjunction with the celebration of the town fiesta of Binmaley.
