UPang hosts all-amateur cycling tilt on Feb. 17

PANGASINAN’s first all-amateur cycling road event of the year, to be hosted by the University of Pangasinan (UPang), is set on February 17 with the province’s top 60 cyclists expected to participate.

The race, dubbed as the “University of Pangasinan Foundation Day Cycling Classic”, will be held in conjunction with UPang’s foundation day celebration.

Cesar Duque, chairman of the board of UPang, said the road play will start at UPang’s compound at 10:30 a.m., traverse the municipalities of Binmaley, Lingayen, Bugallon, Aguilar, Mangatarem, San Clemente and Camiling of Tarlac province, Bayambang, Malasiqui, San Carlos City, Calasiao, Tuliao junction (Sta. Barbara), Mangaldan, Longos junction (San Fabian), then finish accross UPang via Bonuan road with an approximate distance of 143 kilometers.

“We are staging a cycling competition because we want to contribute to sports development in the province,” said Duque.

“We want also to emphasize that our school is not only an educational institution but also a developer of athletes and I believe that someday soon our young cyclists in the province will emerge as national champions again,” he added.

Trophies, medals and cash prizes are up for grabs with the top winner to bag P8,000. First and second runners-up will pocket P6,000 and P4,000, respectively.

Fourth placer earns P2,000; fifth gets P1,000; sixth, P900; seventh, P800; eighth, P700; ninth P600 and tenth, P500.

All survivors of the race will receive a goad prize of P200 each.—JAG, Jr.
