Pangasinenses warned of 6-meter-high tsunami
THE provincial government of Pangasinan has called on all residents to be on high alert for a massive tsunami that could reach up to six meters high if an 8.2 magnitude earthquake occurs, particularly in the potentially active Manila Trench in the West Philippine Sea.
Vicente Chu, head of the Operations Section of the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), issued the warning during a lecture at the Stakeholders’ Forum held on Monday, October 27, in celebration of the 100th day in office of PNP Pangasinan Provincial Director, Police Colonel Arbel Mercullo.
Chu revealed that Pangasinan is crisscrossed by several active fault lines which, if triggered, could cause significant earthquakes and, subsequently, a devastating tsunami.
Some of the most notable active fault lines in the province include the Agno Fault, Dasol Fault, East Zambales Fault, and the Philippine Fault System, which comprises the Tuba, Tebbo, San Jose, and Dalumpinas faults.
As a result, authorities are calling on residents, especially those living near coastal areas, to remain vigilant and prepared.
“It is crucial that everyone in Pangasinan must know the safety measures to take in the event of a tsunami,” Chu emphasized, urging local leaders to finalize evacuation plans to ensure swift responses during a disaster.
Chu also shared key tsunami warning signs to watch for, particularly for those near the shoreline. These include a strong earthquake or tremor, a noticeable change in water level, such as the ocean receding unusually far, and a loud roaring sound or rumble coming from the sea.
“If you feel an earthquake, notice the water level dropping, or hear a roar from the ocean, do not hesitate,” Chu warned. “Immediately move to higher ground and evacuate to safety.”
Authorities stressed the importance of community awareness and preparedness, particularly in coastal towns, to ensure the safety of residents in the event of a tsunami. (Ahikam Pasion)
