A resolution was filed by Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia on August 26 expressing the profound condolences of the House of Representatives on the passing of Mr. Ermin F. Garcia Jr. and to honor him for his distinguished career spanning more than five decades as a journalist, publisher and editor.

The still unnumbered resolution states that the House joins the family and the people of Pangasinan in mourning the passing of Mr. Garcia, a pillar of Philippine journalism, who died on July 23, 2025, at the age of 77.

He was best known as the Publisher-Editor of the Sunday Punch, the oldest community newspaper in Pangasinan, founded by his late father, Ermin E. Garcia Sr., a courageous journalist who gave his life in line of duty in 1966, the resolution reads.

Further, it states that Mr. Garcia’s distinguished career extended to the national stage as he also became publisher of The Manila Times in the 1990s, where he reinforced the ideals of a free and independent press, advancing the cause of the truth, accountability, and democratic discourse.

He also embraced the airwaves as one of the commentators of IFM Dagupan in the talk show “Punchline”, further demonstrating his commitment to informing, educating, and engaging the public across diverse platforms.

Mr. Garcia graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Behavioral Science, equipping him with the perspective and discipline that marked his career and personal life, the resolution further states.

He is remembered, according to the resolution, as a loving son, a proud Pangasinense, and a steadfast defender of responsible journalism, whose voice and pen were dedicated to uplifting the lives of others and guarding the values of freedom and democracy.  (Leonardo Micua)
