Lone opposition in Dagupan SP is powerless
AFTER lording it over the Dagupan Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) in the past three years, lone opposition and former majority leader Councilor Librada Reyna now finds herself without chairmanship and membership in any committee.
The only survivor among the 12 candidates of the ‘LiFe’ team in the May 12 election, Reyna took the 10th and last spot for councilors, with the nine others won by allies of Mayor Belen Fernandez. Two other seats occupied by representatives of the barangay and the youth are also allied with the mayor.
Re-elected Vice Mayor Bryan Kua, the SP presiding officer and also a Fernandez ally, said that with just one oppositionist in the council, it effectively means there is no minority.
Councilor Joey Tamayo agreed with Kua, saying that since Reyna will have no one to second any motion she makes, she would be useful if she just supports meaningful legislation.
The officers of the 12th Dagupan SP are Kua as presiding officer; Jose Netu Tamayo, presiding pro tempore; and Michael Fernandez, floor leader.
The committee chairs are:
- Jeslito Seen – Finance, Budget and Appropriation; Arts, Culture and Heritage; Economic Affairs and Consumer Protection; Environment and Natural Resources; Public Markets;
