No confirmed Mpox cases at R1MC

THERE is still no recorded Mpox – previously called monkeypox – case at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), the facility’s head confirmed.

Speaking to Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan last week, Dr. Roland Joseph Mejia, R1MC director, clarified that while there was a suspected case, confirmatory tests revealed that the patient had chickenpox, not Mpox.

He explained that although both diseases are caused by pox viruses, they are distinct from each other, and the confirmatory test is essential to determine the exact nature of the infection.

Dr. Mejia  said the transmission of monkeypox, spreads through direct contact with an infected person. Being a viral infection, it is crucial for patients with suspected Monkeypox to be isolated to prevent further transmission, and  R1MC has a separate building dedicated to housing patients with contagious diseases, including Mpox, which ensures proper containment and care.

He urged the public to prioritize their immune system health, maintain a healthy lifestyle to strengthen immunity, because malnutrition has underlying conditions like hypertension and diabetes, and exposure to pandemic viruses can compromise one’s defense against infections. (Ahikam Pasion)
