A green celebration for 77th ‘Agew na Dagupan’
MASSIVE TREE PLANTING SET
THE 77th Agew na Dagupan on June 20 will be marked with massive tree planting, mainly at the soon-to-be closed dumpsite in Bonuan that is being primed for transformation into an eco-tourism park.
City Legal Officer Aurora Valle, speaking during the 127th Independence Day observance at Dagupan City Plaza on Thursday, invited residents to join the tree planting activity.
Mayor Belen Fernandez will lead the Dagupan Day celebration, which will kick off with the laying of a wreath at the foot of the monument of the late Speaker Eugenio Perez, author of Republic Act 20 that converted the former town of Dagupan into a chartered city, the first in Pangasinan.
For the tree planting activity, more than 2,000 tree seedlings and saplings of different flowering species were made available by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office through Engr. Noriel Nisperos.
Fernandez clarified that only the cleared portions of the four-and-a-half-hectare dumpsite will be planted, as clearing of the remaining mound of garbage that accumulated for decades is still ongoing.
She expressed confidence that the facility, which has already been closed for dumping, will eventually be closed by the end of this year.
Clearing of the area is being done by two backhoes and one payloader, which load the garbage to five dump trucks for transport to Urdaneta City.
The drawback, however, is that each dump truck is limited in terms of the number of trips it can make to the Urdaneta Sanitary Landfill, as the site is also used by other local government units. (Leonardo MIcua)
