DENR hails impending closure of Dagupan dumpsite

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) hailed the efforts of the Dagupan City government in clearing the Bonuan dumpsite for its total closure, targeted by the end of this year.

The permanent closure of dumpsites in the country is mandated under the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA 9003).

Dagupan Waste Management Division Head Bernard Cabison said the DENR is keenly monitoring developments at the dumpsite as well as giving support through the provision of assorted tree seedlings that could adapt well to the sandy soil near the beach.

The dumpsite, once closed, will be redeveloped into an eco-tourism park.

Cabison, quoting Engr. Noriel Nisperos of DENR, said the agency cheered the re-election of Mayor Belen Fernandez as this assured continuity of the planned dumpsite closure.

More than 2,000 tree seedlings have already been planted at the cleared area of the dumpsite, and City Engineer Josephine Corpuz said once all the garbage is gone, levelling will be undertaken in preparation for massive tree planting.

With the use of a brand new backhoe and a payloader acquired by the city government, up to 20 truckloads of garbage are being brought to the sanitary landfill of Urdaneta daily. (Leonardo Micua)
