MBTF stands by her road elevation projects

DAGUPAN Mayor Belen Fernandez, who is running for reelection in the May 12 poll, brushed aside the claim of the opposition that the road elevation projects she pursued will not address the persistent flooding problem in the city.

In a talk to newsmen over Kabaleyan Channel 17  on USATV, she asserted that it was the correct solution to ask the national government, through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), to fund, design and implement flood mitigation’s projects in Dagupan, for which she received a positive response.

She said the DPWH has the flood-related data for Dagupan and the technical knowledge to build infrastructure that will mitigate the problem.

Among the road elevation and drainage improvement projects that were implemented cover Arellano and M.H. Del Pilar Streets, and portions of A.B, Fernandez Avenue and Perez Boulevard.

The national projects were complemented by the elevation of about 40 connecting streets using local funds.

The mayor said several private establishments such as the Universidad  de Dagupan, Nepo Mall, and University of Pangasinan, among others, have elevated their respective premises in line with the elevated roads, an indication of the business sector’s support to the program.

The coastal city is particularly vulnerable to flooding with the combined impact of heavy rains and high tide.

“I don’t believe that there is no solution to the floods in Dagupan. There is one and it was already implemented,” Fernandez said.

She said if she gets reelected along with Vice Mayor Bryan Kua and all members of the Unliserbisyo Team, 40 more road elevation projects are already planned. (Leonardo Micua)
