APRIL 5 will be a special non-working holiday for the celebration of Agew na Pangasinan, with an official declaration issued last week by Malacañang.

Proclamation No. 848, s. 2025, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by authority of the President, acknowledges the significance of the occasion and ensures that the people of Pangasinan have the opportunity to fully engage in the celebrations.

“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the province of Pangasinan be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the proclamation stated.

This year marks the 445th founding anniversary of Pangasinan, which traces its roots back to April 5, 1580, when it officially gained its status as a separate political entity.

Originally observed on November 30, the shift to April 5 as Pangasinan foundation day was the result of a 2009 study by the Pangasinan Research and Study Committee, which revealed that the province was indeed founded on April 5, 1580 when it officially became a political unit distinct from its surrounding territories.

In light of this, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan enacted Provincial Ordinance 143 in 2010, officially recognizing April 5, 1580 as Pangasinan’s true foundation day. (Eva Visperas)
