Archbishop Soc delivers personal tribute to Pope Francis
LINGAYEN-DAGUPAN Archbishop Socrates Villegas released a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis following his death on April 21, Easter Monday.
In an emotional message titled “Message of Sorrow and Hope,” Villegas captured the deep grief and gratitude felt by many Filipinos who fondly referred to the late pope as Lolo Kiko.
“Although we grieve like orphans because he was truly Lolo Kiko for us, we also stand firm in faith and hope that the radiance of the risen Lord will shine upon him forever,” the archbishop wrote.
Pope Francis, described by Villegas as “the gift of the Good Shepherd to the Church,” is remembered not only for his humble service and boundless compassion but also for his courageous spirit.
He stood as a moral compass for the Church, often challenging complacency and prejudice, and calling on all to care for creation and walk in Jesus’ footsteps, he said.
“The images of his memorable visit to the Philippines are clear and vivid in our grateful hearts. In sunshine or under the rain, he made us feel the love of God,” Villegas recounted, referring to the Pope’s 2015 visit.
In a deeply personal moment, Villegas revealed how Pope Francis supported him amid threats and criticism for speaking out against extrajudicial killings. “He assured me and encouraged me personally in Rome to carry on my task of guiding the flock through my pastoral letters. He knew his bishops. He knew our tears. He knew us and he loved us. He taught us not to fear,” he said. (Eva Visperas)
