IN a transformative initiative to improve food security and hunger, the local government of Sto. Tomas launched the Food for the Needy program on February 10 during the town’s 117th Foundation Day celebration.

The program was developed to distribute essential food items like groceries, cooked meals, and food packages to households facing food insecurity to combat hunger, prevent malnutrition, and build a resilient community.

Helen Delos Santos, secretary to the Sangguniang Bayan, shared insights into the program. “Vice Mayor Dick Villar and Mayor Dickerson started this initiative to ensure that no one goes hungry in our town,” said Delos Santos and underscored the collaboration, including contributions from farmers, concerned citizens, local officials, employees.

“On February 10, we gave out a variety of food items, such as rice, eggs, noodles, sardines, and even fresh vegetables like upo (bottle gourd), tomatoes, eggplants, patola, and chili leaves… also mung beans, and even meatloaf… all donations from local farmers and the town’s officials, including Vice Mayor Villar and other members of the Sangguniang Bayan ” she added

“The farmers have been very generous,” Delos Santos noted. “They contribute their surplus produce to support the program… and the distribution process is simple and community-focused, she said.  “If there’s a surplus, we give it out. If someone comes and doesn’t have food for the day, we make sure they’re provided for. Our mayor, vice mayor don’t want anyone to go hungry,” she added.

The program isn’t just about providing food—it’s a symbol of community spirit and resilience. “It’s like a pantry,” she added, referring to the accessibility of the food.

“We also have support from the Sanggunian and the mayor’s office,” Delos Santos continued. “When people are in need, whether for food, medicine, or financial assistance, they know they can come here. We are committed to helping those who need it most.”

The Food for the Needy program is set to continue as long as supplies last. Contributions from local farmers and businesses will continue to be a critical component of the program’s success.

As Delos Santos put it, “This is not just about food. It’s about making sure our community stays strong and united, even in difficult times.” (Eva Visperas)
