THE Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Region 1 is intensifying monitoring efforts and response as dengue fever cases have surged by 114% in the first two months of the year, with six deaths recorded, including five in Pangasinan, including one in Dagupan City, and another in La Union.

From January to February this year, 1,064 dengue cases were recorded in the region, more than double the 497 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Pangasinan has been the hardest hit with 529 cases plus another 65 in Dagupan City; followed by La Union with 220 cases; Ilocos Sur, 167; and Ilocos Norte, 83 cases.

Dr. Rhuel Bobis, DOH-CHD 1 spokesperson, attributed the rise in cases to the increased rainfall at the beginning of 2025 created ideal breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, the carriers of the dengue virus.

Health officials have recommended the establishment of a “Dengue Fastlane” in hospitals to ensure that dengue patients receive prompt medical attention. (Ahikam Pasion)
