Gun ban for May election starts this week
THE gun ban and other restrictions to ensure a safe and orderly midterm elections in May takes effect on January 12, Sunday, and will last until June 11.
In a recent press briefing, Atty. Nathaniel Siaden, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Officer IV of COMELEC Urdaneta City, underscored the restrictions of the gun ban aimed at preventing violence during the campaign and election period.
Gun ban violators face penalties of imprisonment ranging from a minimum of one year to a maximum of six years as well as fines ranging from P1,000 to P30,000, and the possibility of disqualification from holding any government position.
The election ban also prohibits public officials from having security personnel unless they obtain permission from COMELEC. Additionally, the suspension of officials at the provincial, municipal, and barangay levels is also banned during this period.
As the campaign period for national positions approaches on February 11, the distribution of aid and donations will also be prohibited.
For local positions, including candidates for the House of Representatives, governors, vice governors, board members, mayors, vice mayors, and councilors, the campaign period will begin on March 28, which will also see restrictions on the hiring of new employees.
In preparation for the upcoming May 2025 vote, COMELEC is conducting demonstrations on the use of new automated counting machines provided by Korean company Miru. (Ahikam Pasion)
