COMELEC: No rule vs. candidates’ posters

NO CLEAR VIOLATIONS NOTED

WEEKS before the official campaign period starts, posters of candidates for both the national and local elections in May have been flagrantly posted across Pangasinan but no violations could be filed.

According to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) these posters do not explicitly state that they should be voted upon but the candidates obviously resort to this ‘campaign’ poster to merely introduce and reinforce their ‘name recall’ among voters.

COMELEC Provincial Election Officer Erickson Oganiza also pointed out that based on a ruling by the Supreme Court, there is” premature campaigning” in automated elections because no one is considered a candidate until the campaign period starts..

However, while there have been no election-related violations identified at this time, candidates are still not exempt from adhering to other existing laws, particularly concerning environmental regulations such as the prohibition against affixing posters to trees.

The campaign period for those running for national positions is set to begin on February 11, while the campaign for local positions will commence on March 28. (Ahikam Pasion)

Over 8K teachers to serve as BEI for May polls

MORE than 8,600 teachers in Pangasinan will take on the role of Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) for the May 12 national and local midterm elections, and preparations are underway for their duties.

Provincial Election Supervisor Ericson Oganiza said a series of training sessions will be held for the BEIs in March to ensure their preparedness to supervise the voting process for the 2.1 million registered voters in the province.

A BEI team is led by a chairperson, with assistance from a poll clerk and a third member.

Appointment is based on competence, impartiality, and capacity to fulfill electoral responsibilities, including managing the voting process, implementing election-day procedures, and securing and transmitting election results.

They will oversee approximately 2,800 clustered precincts across the province. (Ahikam Pasion)
