Police Lieutenant Celeste Cereno assists “Ana” during an emergency delivery of her baby inside the mobile patrol vehicle.

A ROUTINE shift for a police officer at the San Jacinto Municipal Police Station turned into an extraordinary display of quick thinking and compassion when she helped deliver a baby on the way to the hospital.

At around dusk on October 30, while stationed in front of the San Jacinto Police Station, P/Lieutenant Celeste Cereno, the duty officer, was approached by a woman identified only as “Ana,” accompanied by her husband and mother, who urgently needed help as she was in birth labor.

Efforts to call for an ambulance proved unsuccessful, prompting Cereno to make a decisive move. She authorized the use of a police mobile vehicle to immediately transport Ana to the Mapandan Community Hospital.

Cereno, who happens to be a registered nurse, accompanied Ana in the vehicle driven by Police Corporal Glevin Lope.

As they raced toward the hospital, Cereno offered calm and reassuring words to Ana, encouraging her to hold on and assuring her they were nearly there. However, before they could reach the hospital, it became clear that the baby was about to be born.

Quickly adapting to the emergency, Cereno used the latex gloves required for officers to carry as part of their standard deployment gear to help the mother deliver a healthy baby boy, just moments before reaching the hospital.

Both mother and child were immediately attended to upon arrival at Mapandan Community Hospital and are in stable condition. (Eva Visperas)
