THREE people were injured after a van driven by Dagupan City Councilor Maria Librada ‘Dada’ Reyna-Macalanda, who reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel caused a serious mishap in Barangay Tapuac in the afternoon of August 7.

Police investigation showed the councilor first hit a pedestrian, Pauline Joy Agosto Nuevo, a 21-year-old fourth-year college student from Agno. It then crashed into a parked car, whose owner, Arminda Paragas Sinlao, 42, of Barangay Malued, Dagupan City, was inside, and then into a parked tricycle, where the driver, Jerome Delos Santos Bantangan, 22, of Malued District was resting.

Nuevo suffered multiple physical injuries, while Sinlao suffered swelling due to airbag impact and an injured foot. Bantangan’s right foot and nose were injured. All three injured individuals were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment while Reyna-Macalanda was unharmed.

At the police station, she assured the victims that she will pay for all the hospital care and damages caused by her incident.

Police reminded the public not to drive when sleepy, or drunk, as this could lead to serious accidents. (Ahikam Pasion)
