BOLINAO in Pangasinan rivaled San Juan in La Union as the most visited tourist destination in Region 1 in  year 2023.

This was bared by Department of Tourism Regional Director Jeff Ortega during the Bagong Pilipinas Kapihan hosted by the Philippine Information Agency in Region 1 last Tuesday, July 9.

He said Bolinao was already the region’s most visited tourist destination in 2022,  but San Juan, LU had more visitors in 2023.

San Juan, LU the acknowledged surfing capital of the country, recorded 215,645 visitors in 2023, whereas Bolinao, that boasts of enticing beaches and waterfalls, recorded 212,514 visitors.

Third most visited tourist destination in the Region 1 was Pagudpod, Ilocos Norte, that recorded 115,000 visitors, followed closely by Dasol, Pangasinan, visited by 114,000 visitors in 2013.

Dasol, he said, is a tourist gem in Pangasinan because in spite of being remote and visitors are on home stays for lack of hotels and inns in the areas, it is still attracting more domestic tourists.

Ortega expects tourism to peak in Dasol and other areas of Western Pangasinan once the Pangasinan Link Expressway from Binalonan to Lingayen and from Lingayen to western Pangasinan is in place.

He urged the provincial government to build more roads leading to Dasol and more private investors to build hotels in the town to make to make tourism as top money earner in that part of the province.

He also tagged San Fabian as another top tourist destination in Region 1.

He said 4th District Rep. Christopher de Venecia is collaborating with the DOT for the promotion San Fabian as another top tourist destination in Pangasinan.

Citing local folks in San Fabian producing salt by cooking salt water, both Ortega said De Venecia had asked the salt producers to add more value to their product so that they can sell more and earn more for their families.

He said the “Palengke” tour in Bauang, is an ideal tourist come-on for families that  visit the town and would like to cook their own food in their lodging houses. (Leonardo Micua)
