Chinese vessel spotted near Infanta, alarms local fishermen

LOCAL fishermen in Infanta expressed alarm over what appears to be Chinese vessel sighted approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast.

The Infanta local government, led by Mayor Marvin Martines, will convene a meeting to address the situation.

The vessel’s presence raised questions about its purpose and impact on the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing in the area and the fishermen remain uncertain about its intentions and destination.

They expressed hope that concerned national agencies will soon verify whether the spotted vessel is, indeed, of Chinese origin.

Marites Etac, president of the Cato Fisherfolk Association, underscored the potential threats posed by the vessel and the fear it instills among local fishermen.

Mayor Martines said they will closely monitor movements of the ship.

Infanta is home to around 2,000 fishermen, who continue their fishing activities despite challenges.

However, due to the presence of Chinese ships, they have been unable to access the Scarborough Shoal (also known as Bajo de Masinloc) since December.

China’s maritime policies have since restricted their traditional fishing grounds.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the well-being of the community and uphold territorial rights. (Ahikam Pasion)
