MBTF reminds bashers: Flood mitigation projects in city only 60% completed

CRITICS of Mayor Belen Fernandez over the road elevation projects in the city resurfaced to bash her anew on social media blaming her for the flash flood caused by high tide that came simultaneously after a sudden thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon.

Hindi pa po tapos,” was Fernandez’s terse reply during an IFM Radio Dagupan interview, referring to the road elevation projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on A.B. Fernandez, Arellano Street, M. H. Del Pilar and Perez Boulevard.

She said the flood on Tuesday at the intersection of Perez Boulevard, M.H. Del Pilar and Mayombo road in front of Mercury Drug Store was caused by high tide and work on the drainage systems area by the DPWH are only 60% completed.

Once completed, part of the flood water on Perez Boulevard will flow to the Pantal River and the other parts will go through the drainage system on M.H. Del Pilar in front of SM Dagupan Central and flow towards A.B. Fernandez Avenue before it empties at the Tambac River, said Fernandez.

Among the pending works are construction of drainage that will affect a school on Perez Boulevard and the building at the foot of the Magsaysay Bridge on A.B. Fernandez Avenue.

She said the correct solutions are being done today because the past city administration failed to provide the solution to the perennial floods in Dagupan.

Fernandez cited the multi-million peso flood gate and pumping station on Rizal Street built by the past Lim administration that it could not even use to ease the flooding in the downtown area.

She noted a flood gate on Arellano Street that should have been built close to the river, was built close to the street.

“But under my watch, something is being done to ease the flooding through all these flood mitigation projects initiated by the DPWH with not a single centavo being spent by the Dagupan City government, backed by constant dredging of shallow rivers and creeks,” Fernandez intoned. (Leonardo Micua)
