HOST Laoag City rallied in the last two days to overtake and dethrone defending champion Pangasinan II and won its first crown ever in the Ilocos Region Athletic Association Meet that ended April 27 at the Marcos Stadium in Laoag.

The new champion amassed 79 gold, 53 silver and 68 bronze medals while the deposed champion only racked up 61 gold, 49 silver and 68 bronze for first runner-up finish.

Laoag City nailed the championship from its victories in arnis, gymnastics, taekwondo and tennis while Pangasinan II ruled in basketball, dance sports, football, para games and swimming.

Ilocos Norte was second runner-up with 52 gold, 68 silver and 58 bronze, winning in archery, athletics, baseball and wushu while Ilocos Sur was third runner-up with 34 gold, 35 silver and 43 bronze as it clinched victories in badminton, pencak silat and volleyball.

Dagupan City took the crowns in aero gymnastics and boxing again for a fourth-runner up honor, like it did in the 2023 edition of the R1AA meet held in San Carlos City.

Pangasinan 1 was relegated to fifth runner-up with 29 gold, 48 silver and 51 bronze medals, winning in futsal and sepak takraw, followed by seventh placer La Union with 28 gold, 34 silver and 47 bronze, winning only in wrestling.

In 8th place was Urdaneta City with 25 gold, 24 silver and 33 bronze by virtue of its second place finishes in basketball, trailed by San Carlos City in ninth place with 18 gold, 17 silver and 21 bronze, followed by San Fernando City with 16 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals to take 10th place.

Vigan City was 11th place with 14 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze while Candon City landed in 12th place with 13 gold, eight silver and 10 bronze but surprised all athletic delegations when it ruled in billiards.

Alaminos City was in 13th place with 12 gold, 13 silver and 24 bronze while Batac City remained as cellar-dweller with just two gold, six silver and seven bronze medals. (Leonardo Micua)
