San Roque Dam ‘fighting’ to provide water for irrigation, electricity
THE San Roque Dam located in San Manuel town, is still able to provide irrigation for farmers despite a considerable amount of water lost over the past days.
Tom Valdez, San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) vice president, said the dam is still operating normally, despite the water level lower than the normal high.
PAGASA monitoring on April 04, 2024 reveals that San Roque Dam water level was 234.71 meters above sea level (masl) out of its 280 masl normal high water level or 45.29 masl of water lost from the dam.
Despite the lowering water level, Valdez said the SRPC is also still capable of generating electricity.
The SRPC is only generating electricity for 8 hours daily, leaving 16 hours for the dam to recoup lost water by receiving water coming down from the mountains of Benguet. As a result, the dam only loses around 0.02 masl daily.
Valdez expressed optimism that the dam would most likely no longer reach the 225 masl critical low water level.
If the dam reaches this water level, the dam would no longer be able to produce electricity.
Valdez urges the public to continue conserving water, as the El Niño phenomenon and its after effects are still expected to linger for long. (Ahikam Pasion)
