DAILY 40–43 CELSIUS DEGREES

TWENTY local government units issued executive orders directing all pre-schools, elementary and high schools (both public and private), in their respective areas, to suspend face-to-face classes and shift to online classes to protect the health of learners from the extremely high heat index this summer.

With daily heat index ranging from 40 to 43 degrees celsius in Pangasinan, municipal and city mayors decided to suspend classes to preempt impact of excessive summer heat indoor and outdoor upon pupils and students, i.e., cramps, heart exhaustion and heat stroke.

On April 2, nine towns and two cities already suspended face-to-face classes from pre-school to high school on account of extreme heat index from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily.

The towns of Mangaldan and Calasiao were among the first to suspend classes on April 2.

In Urdaneta City, only the Urdaneta National High School is suspending face-to-face classes in the afternoon.

The Equia National High School was the only school in Dasol town that suspended face-to-face classes from pre-school to high school.

In Dagupan City, Mayor Belen Fernandez ordered the suspension of classes in pre-school to senior high school only in public schools since some private schools in Dagupan are equipped with air-condition units.

She earlier suggested to City Schools Superintendent Rowena Banzon to officially suspend face-to-face classes, since the former has also the power to suspend classes.

Other towns that eventually ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes and adopted on-line instruction for learners were pre-schools to high schools in Malasiqui, Manaoag, Mapandan, San Jacinto and Sta. Barbara.

Meanwhile, Mangatarem and Sta. Barbara towns suspended face-to-face classes in all levels.

Recall that the extremely high heat index occurring from April to May prompted the call for DepEd officials to revert to the shift of the opening of schools from September to June. (Leonardo Micua)
