THE implementation of the monumental project of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and the Pangasinan provincial government officially started after the groundbreaking of the P34-billion Pangasinan Link Expressway (PLEx) and the unveiling of its marker in a ceremony held along Barangay Balligi, Laoac town on March 21.

In his speech, Ramon S. Ang, president and chief executive officer of SMC, said “PLEX is set to connect the east and the west of Pangasinan, improving travel and driving economic development.”

“This project is part of our commitment to improving the lives of our kababayan by creating jobs and opening up more economic opportunities at no cost to the government” he pointed out.

Ang said phase one of the project consists of three main sections: 1)Binalonan to Manaoag, 2). Manaoag to Calasiao, and 3) Calasiao to Lingayen.

While Phase 2 will extend to Alaminos as demand increases he said PLEX will already connect to the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), “providing direct access to our New Manila International Airport in Bulacan envisioned to be the country’s largest and most modern international gateway”.

He thanked Gov. Ramon Guico III, Vice Gov. Mark Ronald Lambino and other stakeholders who has played a part in bringing this vision to life… “Your dedication reminds us that when we join hands for a common purpose, there’s nothing we cannot accomplish.”

For his part, Gov. Guico said he is overjoyed as the realization of his long-time dream project has started.

“The measure of success is what one can do, given the opportunity, the position, the resources, the friends, the connections on what we can do for our country, in our locality and in this case, in the province of Pangasinan,” Guico said.

Lahat ng aming mga malalaking proyekto ay naka angkla po sa pag co-construct po ng ating PLEX because this serves as the backbone of our province in terms of ease of travel, in terms of connectivity,” the governor said.

He said Binalonan was simply an agricultural town until TPLEX was constructed and a toll plaza was set in the town. “That’s when all the progress of Binalonan happened fast.”

He cited the TPLEX as a model that it will open so many doors for the other towns and cities of Pangasinan,” he said.

Vice Governor Mark Ronald Lambino hailed the groundbreaking as the start of one of the greatest accomplishments of this administration of Gov. Ramon “Mon-mon” Guico.

In 35 years, PLEX will be owned by the province. (Eva Visperas)
