El Niño dries 578 agri lands in Pangasinan

IT’S only mid-March and almost 600 hectares of agricultural lands in Pangasinan already dried up due to the impact of El Niño.

This was bared by the Department of Agriculture Region I, through its Fields Operations Division chief Analiza Ramos.

Ramos said 578 hectares with planted crops, including rice, corn, and other high-value crops, were registered to have been damaged due to drought.

The National Irrigation Administration distributed more than 600 water pumps to various farmers’ groups to mitigate the expected effect of drought in the province.

However, while affected farmlands in Pangasinan seem extensive, it is Ilocos Norte that is most affected by El Niño in the region, with 947 hectares of farmlands severely damaged, while Ilocos Sur registered 148 hectares ravaged.

La Union has not reported any serious damage.

Overall in the region, a total of 2,966.98 hectares are affected – which also includes partially damaged lands. 5,925 farmers are affected. (Ahikam Pasion)
