Transport groups rejoice over deadline extension
TRANSPORT groups in Pangasinan rejoice over the extension of the deadline for consolidation of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) operators.
This, after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the deadline be reset to April 30 this year.
Bernard Tuliao, president of the AutoPRO-Pangasinan, the largest transport group in the province, said they are happy for the decision, as some of their members were not able to consolidate on December 31.
“Inakala namin na tapos na sila kasi hindi sila nakapag-consolidate, mabuti at na-extend siya”, said Tuliao.
According to Tuliao, only five percent of the 3,400 traditional jeepneys, or around 170, were unable to consolidate into corporations or cooperatives, but this is not due to their refusal to comply but because they were left behind by their peers who established their own cooperatives.
Cooperatives for the modernization program set a limit to number of members.
However, despite 95-percent compliance, Tuliao said majority are still unable to purchase modernized PUVs. (Ahikam Pasion)
