THE region’s Department of Health–Center for Health Development urged parents to keep a close eye on their children, as most of the victims of firecracker-related injuries are minors.

Dr. Rheuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV, said in an interview Wednesday that ‘boga’, or improvised cannons made of PVC pipes or cans are the leading cause of firecracker injuries in the region.

Dapat bantayan ng mga magulang ang mga anak nila at pigilan silang magpaputok lalo pag menor de edad pa sila,” he said.

Minors should not light firecrackers, Bobis stressed.

Meanwhile, Bobis said since some children will insist on lighting firecrackers, parents and other elders might as well learn how to conduct first aid in case of injuries.

For blast or burn injuries, the wound should be washed in clean, running water for 15 minutes. Then, place a gauze on the wound after washing it. Hydrogen Peroxide or alcohol should NOT be administered, he said.

In case someone ingests a firecracker, the child should be fed with six to eight egg whites. In the case of an adult, he should be swallow eight to twelve egg whites.

All cases, minor or major, should be rushed to the hospital after administering first aid.

Ang mga pinsalang dala ng mga paputok ay walang home remedy,” he said. (Ahikam Pasion)
