THREE local government units in Pangasinan were cited by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and in Humanitarian Assistance during the 23rd Gawad Kalasag Seal and Special Award.

The local governments of San Fabian, Alaminos City and Anda were named Beyond Compliant Municipalities and City, an accolade they shared with city of San Fernando in La Union.

Among the four provinces in the region, the highest award, Beyond Compliant Province, was received by Ilocos Sur, followed by Pangasinan and La Union as Fully Compliant Provinces.

There were 23 Fully Compliant Municipalities and Cities in Pangasinan, namely: San Carlos City, San Nicolas, Sta. Barbara, Tayug, Urbiztondo, Umingan, Villasis, Urdaneta City, Alcala, Asingan, Basista, Bolinao, Bugallon, Calasiao, Infanta, Lingayen, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, Mangatarem, Mapandan, Natividad, Pozorrubio, Rosales and San Manuel.

The Gawad Kalasag Award is an annual awards program that recognizes significant initiatives of local government units in the significant promotion and advancement of disaster risk reduction management in the country.

Kalasag is the Filipino term for “shield” used by early Filipinos as means of protection from attacks of enemies or harmful animals. (Leonardo Micua)
